Hutchings DOMINION ASTROPHYSICAL OBSER CANADA (604) 388-0018 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract AM Her type binaries contain highly magnetic accreting White Dwarf stars. Emission lines originate in complex columns of accreting material and their profiles change significantly in times of a few minutes as the line of sight geometry alters with binary phase. IUE data reveal that emission lines are present in the UV spectrum but lack the spectral and time resolution to study profile changes. The UV resonance lines arise in different parts of the accretion column from the visible - so will allow new insights into the accretion mechanisms. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. The longest available continuous run is required on each object. In addition, the object should not be in one of its (rare) low states. Thus, scheduling is required to be known far enough ahead to react to the known state of the target. Readouts are required every 5 minutes for as long as the target is available. If earth occultation time is not charged it may help to acquire the target before earth occultation, and start observing immediately it becomes available again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST is the only instrument able to acquire these UV data. HRS lowest dispersion provides the best compromise of S/N and time and spectral resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Observations should be aborted or rescheduled if star is in low state. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Uninterrupted exposures required to provide continuous coverage of rapidly changing spectral lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data reductions can be made at DAO from ST standard output. Line velocities, profiles and intensities will be derived to study orbital and non-orbital velocities, and derive models for the mass-transfer process. Continuum data will simultaneously yield spectral index or temperature changes, and possibly varying cyclotron emission overtones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Need to know scheduled observation date in time to obtain ground-based information on high/low state, and possibly request rescheduling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). All scientific data reductions and other support. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Continuous 5m readouts will be taken for >/= 30 minutes of the UV spectra of 3 AM Her binaries, at resolution 2000 in the far UV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
