Abstract FOS spectra will be taken at selected off-nuclear positions of nearby QSOs. Ground- based imaging has indicated features of interest at these places, such as blue regions, spiral arms, bright areas, or interacting faint companion galaxies. FOS low dispersion spectra will be obtained, generally using the 2 x 2" - aperture with bar. Procedure will be to peak up on the nucleus, take short exposures on the nucleus as a monitor for scattered light, then offset as specified or occult the nucleus and take the off-nuclear exposures. Exposure times are estimated from ground-based surface brightness measures and FOS sensitivity predictions. It is essential to be able to revise exposure times, if necessary, after SV or on initial observation set in this program. The 2 x 2" aperture is used principally to get enough flux from the faint fuzz. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST high spatial resolution essential to avoid nuclear light contamination and to achieve physical resolution in the target objects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Need to monitor FOS sensitivity after first object has been observed. Only 6.9 hours observing time to be used, as far as possible in order of priority. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. DAO VAX and existing software will be used on ST standard data products. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. FOS spectra will be obtained on off-nuclear locations of several QSOs with existing ground-based imaging.
