Abstract FOS high and low dispersion spectra wil be obtained in the UV to study stellar wind lines at selected orbital phases. In LMC X-4, these will be carried out at two precessional phases as well. The data will be used to study stellar wind ionisation and velocity changes with X-ray binary phase, and with variable accretion disk obscuration of X-rays. CAL 87 will be observed at three binary phases with FOS in low dispersion in the UV. LMC X-3 will be observed at two binary phases with FOS high disp in the far UV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Only ST and FOS can provide the S/N and spectral resolution for this study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Orbit and precession phasing is essential to the investigation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data will be analyzed at DAO using spectroscopic software. Ongoing ground- based spectroscopy will update binary and precession ephemeris and monitor spectrum near to time of observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). All support by DAO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. FOS spectra will be obtained at high resolution of LMC X-4, LMC X-1 at binary phases 0.3, 0.8 and repeated at LMC X-4 precession phases at maximum and minimum X-ray illumination of the primary. LMC X-3 and Cal 83 will be observed with FOS in the UV at high dispersion at 2-3 orbit phases.
