In rapidly rotating stars, the surface temperature and brightness varies with stellar latitude because of gravity darkening effects. Thus, line profiles in the far UV are seen principally towards high latitude areas of the star, while those in the visible and red are seen projected against the equator. Copernicus and IUE data have already been used to show that the effect is seen, and to derive estimates of the stellar rotation orientation. Existing UV data however lack S/N and resolution to do the work to its full potential. Further, some rotating stars appear to be unevenly bright, as indicated by asymmetries which move through line profiles in timescales of hours. Existing UV data on these effects are also too noisy to be useful. This program will obtain line profiles of high S/N and resolution of a small sample of stars previously studied with IUE, to address these problems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. HRS echelle observations will be made at lambdalambda1248 and 1304 on each star, to obtain line profiles with S/N ~100. lambda1304 data to be repeated to look for changes. Priority 2 targets are in common with M. Jura. Target acquisition time to be shared. My repeat observations on these should be separated in time as much as possible. Suggest doing my observations first and last with Jura's in between, using single target acquisition for all. If target acquisition is to be charged twice for repeats, I need to be informed. Total time in this program should not significantly exceed 0.5 hours. Observations in any cycle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. IUE and Copernicus data do not have required S/N. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Share target acquisition with M. Jura. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. DAO VAX plus existing software will be used on ST standard processed spectra. The analysis will follow work done on Copernicus data and will likely incorporate line profile calculations to take full advantage of ST data quality. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests.
