Description of proposed observations. We propose to obtain ultraviolet high speed photometry of twenty pulsing X-ray binaries with known optical counterparts. Both single color and simultaneous two- color observations are planned for very short period (and generally faintest) systems and the longer period (and usually brighter) systems, repsectively. The integration times will range from millisecond to one second samples, spanning 2000-3000 seconds total per object. Cycle 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Observations with ST are necessary because: 1) Pulse amplitudes are anticipated to be extermemly small (less than 0.1% in optical regime), requiring the small apertures and dark background of ST; 2) Pulse amplitudes should be larger in ultraviolet than optical region, as they are due to reflected/reprocessed X-rays from neutron stars; 3) Ground based observations of X-ray pulsars with short periods are distorted by atmospheric scintillation. Data from ST is intrinsically free of the effect, which distorts pulse shapes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. An ultraviolet high speed photometric survey of twenty pulsing X-ray binaries with known optical counterparts is proposed. Single and two-color data are desired to study the X-ray heated stellar photospheres of the companion stars by their neutron star primaries.
