Abstract The purpose of this program is to obtain FOS spectra in the UV of three optically discovered novae near the nucleus of M31. If a supernova were to occur in the time frame of interest, it would also be of interest to this program. The FOS spectra are to be obtained roughly one month after maximum, which will involve scheduling on a fairly short timescale. The FOS spectra will permit the carbon abundance (and perhaps the nitrogen and silicon abundances) in the bulge of M31 to be estimated. The observations will also allow an estimate of the feasibility of detecting novae in distant galaxies using the WF/PC and C III 1909 filter (F194W). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. The M31 novae and/or supernovae to be observed in this program will be discovered optically as part of an ongoing optical monitoring program. Broadband and monochromatic magnitudes of the novae will be used to estimate times since outburst. Three such objects will be chosen for observation with the stipulation that the FOS spectra should be obtained within 2 weeks of the discovery. This will require a fast turn-around time (2-3 weeks) for the scheduling of the FOS observations. Cycle 2: 203-204 Cycle 9: 901 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The novae must be observed approximately 4 to 6 weeks after outburst while in a phase with relatively strong UV emission lines. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests - All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets - 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields - 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry - 1st visit of bright targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. Comparison of results from the separate novae is an important part of this project. Therfore, none of these data should be made public until at least 1 year after the last object has been observed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. FOS observations of three optically identified novae (or supernovae) in M31 will be used to determine the carbon abundance in the bulge of M31 and estimate the feasibility of identification and observation of novae in more distant galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
