Abstract The FOS will be used with small apertures to map the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation in the central 1" of NGC221 (M32), NGC224 (M31), and NGC3031 (M81). The velocity disperions and rotation curves will be used to model the nuclear dynamics and to measure nuclear M/Ls. Line strengths will be use to measure changes in the stellar populations in the central 1". WF/PC pictures will be used to isolate nuclear emission line regions in M31 and M81. FOS spectra of the regions will be used to measure the physical characteristics, ionization mechanisms, and dynamics of the clouds. A special search will be made for the remnant of the supernova S-And (1885). This is an integrated program to study nuclear dynamics in normal galaxies and will not be complete until 2 of 3 galaxies and the reference stars from program 1040 (for velocity dispersion measurements) have been completely observed. Data release should not be until 1 year after completion of all observations of 2 galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Stellar velocity dispersion and rotation will be mapped in the central 1" of M31, M32, and M81. FOS spectra of nuclear clouds in M31 and M32 will be used to establish physical conditions and dynamics in the ionized gas.
