Abstract These observations will determine the luminosity functions and tidal radii of globular clusters around 3 galaxies (NGC 4472, NGC 4374, and NGC 4526) in the Virgo cluster of galaxies and 3 galaxies (NGC 1380, NGC 1399, and NGC 1404) in the Fornax cluster of galaxies. ST observations are required in order to reach the faint limiting magnitudes that are necessary to provide sufficient spatial resolution to permit accurate photometry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. THE 20 OBSERVATIONS CONSIST OF TWO IMAGES FOR BOTH THE 5 PRIMARY AND THE 5 PARALLEL TARGETS. THE PRIMARY TARGETS ARE: 1,3,5,7,9. THE PARALLEL TARGETS ARE: 2,4,6,8,10. FOR EACH PRIMARY TARGET, TWO IMAGES WILL BE ACQUIRED USING THE WF CAMERA, ONE WITH F555W AND ONE WITH F785LP. THE TOTAL OBSERVING TIME WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES FOR EACH IMAGE. EACH PRIMARY EXPOSURE HAS AN ODD LINE NUMBER ON THE EXPOSURE LOGSHEET. CYCLE 1 (1-6 MONTHS, SV)=EXPOSURES 1,3 CYCLE 2 (7-18 MONTHS)=EXPOSURES 5,7,9,11 CYCLE 3+4 (19-30 MONTHS)=EXPOSURES 13,15,17,19 THE PARALLEL OBSERVATIONS ARE DESIRABLE, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL. IF A PRIMARY OBSERVATIONS CAN ONLY BE SCHEDULED DURING THE REQUESTED CYCLE BY IGNORING ITS PARALLEL OBSERVATION, THEN IN THIS CASE IGNORE THE PARALLEL OBSERVATION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST observations are essential in order to : (1) reach the faint limiting magnitudes beyond the peak of the luminosity function; (2) to separate globular clusters from galaxies on the basis of their image morphology; and (3) to have sufficient resolution to measure tidal radii. We need to observe globular clusters to at least apparent visual magnitude of 25.7 mag in order to be well beyond the expected peak of the globular cluster luminosity function. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The parallel observations are desirable, but not essential. If a primary observation can only be scheduled during the requested cycle by ignoring its parallel observation, then in this case ignore the parallel observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark time is required to reach the desired faint limiting magnitudes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be performed on the DEC equipment available at the Institute for Advanced Study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
