The sample includes all PG quasars with MB <= -25.0 mag and z <= 0.35. For comparison, we will image a sample of 8 less bright PG quasars (with z >= 0.158 and MB = -24.25 +/- 0.25 mag) to see if the galaxy morphology depends sensitively upon the quasar absolute magnitude. We will also image two intrinsically bright quasars at z ~= 0.5 to test for evidence of evolution. The morphology of the host galaxies is not discernible - in the presence of a bright center source (quasar) - with ground based observations, but will be determined with ST unless the galaxies are unexpectedly faint. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. All exposures should be performed during dark time in order to image the faint surface brightness features of the galaxies. All objects will be imaged once with F702W. In addition, PG 1545+210 will be imaged with F785LP and PG 1352+183 (similar redshift to 3C 273) will be imaged in F675W. The surface brightnesses of individual host objects must be guessed prior to ST observations. We will revise the exposure times for cycles 2 and 3 once we have data from cycle 1. Cycle 1 (1-6 months, SV)=Exposures 1,4,7,8. Cycle 2 (7-18 months)=Exposures 2,3,5,6,9,10,11,12,15,17,20, 23,25. Cycle 3+4 (19-30 months)=Exposures 13,14,16,18,19, 21,22,24,26. Parallel observations with the FOS/RD and G650L will measure the spectrum of the sky near each quasar. Random directions are acceptable. These background measurements will be used in Part II (Spectroscopy) of this proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based observations cannot give a clear picture of the morphology of the host galaxies because of the effects of seeing on the intense light from the bright central sources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Dark time is required to reveal low surface brightness features of host galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark time is required to reveal the galactic features of low surface brightness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed using our image processing system developed for use on WF/PC observations. The software has been used with WF/PC test data and on 5-meter observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Deep 5 meter exposures will be obtained for comparison with ST images and for testing data analysis programs. These ground-based observations will also be used to determine the galactic companions of the bright quasars. Ground-based photometry of the quasars will be carried out as nearly simultaneously as possible to determine quasar brightness at time of ST imaging. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
